Jefferson College and Leonardo DRS Launch Registered Apprenticeship Program
Jefferson College and Leonardo DRS are excited to announce the official launch of a new U.S. Department of Labor-registered apprenticeship program, creating a direct pathway from classroom to career for students studying welding and advanced manufacturing.
This program marks Jefferson College’s first registered apprenticeship in the manufacturing sector and is part of the Missouri Southeastern Partnership for Workforce (MoSEPWork) initiative, funded by a $3.99 million Apprenticeship Building America, Round 2 (ABA2) grant. MoSEPWork is a consortium of southeast Missouri community colleges and four-year institutions committed to expanding workforce opportunities through innovative, employer-aligned training models.
The Leonardo DRS Fabricator/Assembler Apprenticeship blends paid, hands-on training at the company’s facility with related technical instruction from Jefferson College. Apprentices are hired as paid employees and guided by experienced mentors while continuing their classroom education.
“This collaboration represents a strategic investment in our region’s workforce,” said Lora Warner, Director of Workforce and Employment Services at Jefferson College. “It aligns education with industry needs and helps students move into high-demand, sustainable career paths.”
Designed to prepare students for careers in modern manufacturing, this apprenticeship model equips participants with both the theoretical knowledge and real-world skills needed to succeed.
To qualify, post-secondary students must first complete the initial course in the college’s Welding Certification sequence. Approximately 30 Jefferson College students will be eligible to apply for the apprenticeship each semester.
As a registered apprenticeship, the program offers students:
- A paycheck while they learn
- Guaranteed wage increases as competencies are met
- College credit through employment
- One-on-one mentorship with experienced tradespeople
- Eligibility for additional support services through MoSEPWork
This effort supports Jefferson College’s ongoing commitment to workforce readiness and student success while helping local employers grow a skilled and loyal talent pipeline.
