From Tutus to Tool Belts
Kati Theurer is the founder and driving force behind From Tutus to Tool Belts, an initiative dedicated to introducing young girls to the opportunities and excitement of careers in the skilled trades—particularly HVAC.
Kati’s passion for the trades began in childhood. Growing up with a father who worked as a plumber, she spent her early years helping him on side jobs, gaining hands-on experience and a sense of confidence that would shape her future. Although those moments were brief, they left a lasting impression.
Her formal introduction to HVAC came during her sophomore year of high school, when she was offered the chance to assist with installation work. With her parents’ support, she embraced the opportunity. Through practical instruction and increasing responsibility, she developed both skill and a deep appreciation for the trade.
In 2022, while listening to Steve Thurmer’s “Bring Back the Trades” podcast, Kati heard a familiar question: How do we get more women interested in the trades? Reflecting on her own journey, she realized the answer often lies in early exposure. That insight sparked the creation of From Tutus to Tool Belts—a hands-on event designed specifically for girls in grades 5–8.
Hosted at Jefferson College, the program gives young participants the chance to work directly with HVAC tools and equipment, guided by industry professionals. Since its launch, the event has grown significantly, supported by dedicated partners who share Kati’s vision of expanding opportunities for the next generation.
From Tutus to Tool Belts just hosted its 9th event as it continues to inspire girls to explore nontraditional career paths with confidence and curiosity. Kati remains committed to ensuring that every participant leaves with new skills, a sense of accomplishment, and the belief that the trades are a place where they belong.
