    Bio: Mary Albright received her undergraduate degree in Social Work from University of Missouri in St. Louis. She graduated in 1988 with her Master`s degree in Social Work from St. Louis University. She has more than 30 years of experience in the field of behavioral health and for the past 25 years has worked for an employee assistance organization. Mary is Counseling Service Manager for her company and holds qualifications as a Certified Employee Assistance Professional and Substance Abuse Professional. Mary started teaching classes early on in her career, when she worked as a case manager for St. Anthony`s Psychiatric in St. Louis. This is her second year teaching at the college.

    Bio: Lisa Armbruster has taught at Jefferson College since 2007. Her previous teaching experience includes 2 years at Notre Dame High School in St. Louis, 2 years as a teaching assistant at UMSL, and the last 4 years at Maryville University and East Central College. She has taught U.S. & State Government, American Cultural History, Women in American History, Contemporary U.S. History and the U.S. History survey courses. She holds a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Missouri at Columbia and post degree certification for 9-12th grades from UMSL. She also holds a M.A. from the University of Missouri, St. Louis in U.S. History.

    Bio: Kelly Austermann is an active music educator, performing clarinetist, and scholar in the St. Louis area. She has performed with the St. Louis Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hot Springs Festival Orchestra, the Gateway Festival Orchestra, the Fountain Hills Chamber Players, the AKME Clarinet Duo, Casella Sinfonietta, the Saint Louis Wind Symphony, the Vintage Brass Band, the Queens of Swing, El Monstero, and the Lettermen. She can be heard in solo clarinet passages on the Grammy-nominated CD, Fireworks! released under the Equilibrium label and on In This Hid Clearing released under the Naxos label.

    Kelly has extensive teaching experience with students of all ages and ability levels. She currently maintains a private studio of clarinet and saxophone students. She is in demand as an educator; she teaches clarinet, saxophone, music appreciation, and fundamentals of music at East Central College, St. Louis Community College, Jefferson College, Mehlville High School, Parkway West High School, Fox High School, Washington Middle School, and Margaret Buerkle Middle School.

    She has performed and presented research at the International Clarinet Association?s ClarinetFest, the Midwest Clarifest Conference, the American Single Reed Summit Conference, the American Musicological Society Scholars Conference, and the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors Conference. She has also toured with the AKME Clarinet Duo to present numerous masterclasses and perform for university students. She received her Bachelors of Music from the University of Missouri-Columbia, her Masters of Music from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, and recently completed her Doctor of Musical Arts from Arizona State University.

    Bio: Brenda Bauch was born and educated in the Great State of Mississippi. She received her B.P.A. and M.C.J. degrees at the University of Mississippi, where she also completed additional coursework. Most of Ms. Bauch`s professional teaching career was spent in the Great State of Tennessee. Her areas of specialization have been Sociology and Criminal Justice, with some Political Science thrown in. Ms. Bauch feels that being on the Jefferson College Faculty is wonderful, exciting, and challenging. Since beginning this adventure, she has been selected as Faculty Senate President and Program Coordinator. She is also active in curriculum development and implementing WebCT classes. Outside of work, Ms. Bauch is very active in the animal rescue field and is currently the Missouri State Coordinator for Scottish Terrier Rescue. She is very active with the Hillsboro Lion`s Club and affiliated with the "Experience Jefferson County" community organization.

    Bio: Mark Byington earned his A.A. degrees from Mineral Area College. He went on to earn his B.S. degree from Southeast Missouri State University and his M.P.A. degree from City University in Bellevue Washington. He served as a police officer with the Dallas Police Department and with the Mineral Area College Department of Public Safety. He is the former director of the Mineral Area College Law Enforcement Academy and the Missouri Police Corps under the direction of the Office of Justice Programs. He is also a two term POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training) Commissioner and served as training advisor and consultant to the Baltimore Police Commissioner and the City of Baltimore from 2007-2011. He currently serves as Law Enforcement advisor to the Center for Research on Institutions and Social Policy (CRISP).

    Bio: Bob DeBoo is originally from Fort Worth, Texas. He began his formal studies at the University of North Texas, where he studied with Lynn Seaton and Craig Butterfield and then completed his studies at the New School in Manhatten with Ben Street, Michael Moore, Dennis Irwin, Cameron Browne, and Johannes Weidenmuller. He played professionally in New York for a period and then came to St. Louis in 2006. Mr. DeBoo has been incredibly active in the Jazz scene, playing with every major artist in the area. In Saint Louis he has worked often with Willie Akins, Freddie Washington, Denise Thymes, Ptah Williams, Erin Bode, Dave Stone, Adam Maness, Peter Schlamb, and Montez Coleman. A regular fixture at Jazz at the Bistro, he has been involved with many great musicians as they travel through the area - Terrell Stafford, Bruce Barth, Keyon Harrold, Adam Larson, Allison Miller, Peter Martin, Matt Wilson, Emmanuel Harrold, Houston Person, Johnny O`Neal, Chad Lefkowitz-Brown, Geoff Keezer, among many more. Bob is also active in leading his own groups - including performances at LouFest, Chesterfield Jazz Festival, and at Jazz at the Bistro. He is also known for hosting a long-running Jazz jam session at the Kranzberg Arts Center in Grand Center.

    Very involved in Jazz education as well Bob has taught for years with Jazz St. Louis` "JazzU" program, with Jazz at Lincoln Center`s Jazz for Young People program, Peter Martin`s Open Studio Network, and is an adjunct bass professor at Missouri State University and Jefferson College. He has also taught private lessons to many young bassists over the years and keeps a full roster of students.

    Bio: Mary DeClue has a Bachelor`s degree in Social Work from Marquette University and a Master of Social Work degree from Washington University. She has worked in direct social work practice in the health care field providing patient counseling, education, crisis management and case management. She has also been a member of a research team involved in increasing quality of life in individuals with chronic illness through fitness and exercise. She has worked with individuals, groups, and families. Her areas of professional interest include health care, families, and gerontology. She has been employed as an adjunct instructor for Jefferson College since 2011.

    Bio: Paul Dueren received both his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Social Work from the University of Missouri at Columbia, graduating with a Master`s in Social Work in 1977. Paul has been teaching as an adjunct instructor at several different colleges and universities in the St. Louis area since 1979. He has been teaching at Jefferson College since 2010. Prior to his retirement, Paul spent over twenty-seven (27) years working with delinquent youth in a residential treatment facility and retired from full time employment with the St. Louis County government.

    Bio: Laura Dwyer is currently Flute/Piccolo with the Santa Fe Symphony, Winter Opera St. Louis, IRIS Orchestra and the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra. She is a regular performer with the Palm Beach Opera, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, and the Opera Theatre of St. Louis. She was Principal Flute of the Sarasota Opera for many years prior to leaving the position to teach flute at Jacksonville University and the University of North Florida. Laura was recently a featured soloist on Washington University`s Great Artist Series as well as the St. Louis Symphony`s Community Programs Series.

    While in Florida, Laura was also the Executive Director of the First Coast Community Music School where she helped found the Artistry Program and co-created Music My Size, which focused on Yoga and Eurhythmics to foster music readiness in the young child. Deeply passionate about how music and yoga can impact young lives, Laura taught yoga to young women suffering from addiction in Florida and currently teaches Flute and Mindfulness to underserved young musicians through the HEAL Center for the Arts. Laura joined the Faculty of Maryville University in 2017 where she teaches both Flute and Instrumental Ensemble. This fall, she will also join the faculty at McKendree University where she will be the flute instructor. A nationally recognized yoga instructor, Laura teaches classes for musicians geared toward creating increased technical and expressive freedom through body and breath awareness. Her classes also focus on healing overuse injury through awareness and present tools to manage the stress of performance. Laura taught Yoga for the Performing Artist at both the University of North Florida and Jacksonville University to both Jazz and Classical musicians, as well as dancers.

    She has also taught yoga for Amy Porter`s Anatomy of Sound, Keith Underwood`s Ghost Ranch Flute Classes, Trevor Wye`s Summer Master classes, and the National Flute Association Conventions.

    Bio: Tina Hanson earned her Bachelor`s degree in Business Management at Park University, prior to completing her Masters in Sociology at University of Missouri St. Louis.

    Tina is retired from the United States Air Force. She has also worked as a Program Support Analyst and Researcher, National Cemetery Administration, Department of Veteran Affairs.

    Areas of professional interest include the topic of Death and Dying and funerary practices of remembering our dead. Other areas of expertise include Oral Histories, Urban Sociology and Subcultures: Garage sales, auctions and Flea Markets (including buyers and sellers) and the social construction of value.

    Bio: Cody Henry is an active trombonist/sousaphonist/tubist in the St. Louis Metropolitan area and teaches Jazz Trombone at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and Jefferson College in Hillsboro, MO. He currently performs with The Funky Butt Brass Band, and has performed with The Jazz St. Louis Big Band, Birch Creek Academy Band, St. Louis Rivermen, The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, The St. Louis Low Brass Collective, Wally`s Warehouse Waifs, Reggie Thomas, Dave Steinmeyer, Warren Haynes, Wycliffe Gordon, Clay Jenkins, Terell Stafford, and The Urge to name a few. He is an active jazz clinician, having contributed to Jazz St. Louis, the Birch Creek Music Academy, and the Jim Widner summer jazz camps.

    Henry studied arranging and composition with Brett Stamps and Reggie Thomas. He has been commissioned to write arrangements for The St. Louis University High School Jazz Ensemble, The Saint Louis University Jazz Ensemble, the Phil Dunlap Quintet, East St. Louis High School Jazz Ensemble, Jazz St. Louis Big Band, SIUE Concert Jazz Band, Jim Manley, Rick Haydon, Brian Owens and Mardra Thomas. He received his bachelor?s and master?s degrees in jazz performance from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Cody lives in High Ridge, MO, with his wife, three kids and dog, Basie.

    Bio: A native of Wisconsin, french horn instructor Peter Hensel holds music degrees from Carnegie Mellon University (BFA, 1984) and the Juilliard School (MM, 1989). He has professional orchestral experience in the East, South and Midwest of the United States as well as Germany and Mexico abroad. He was a member of US Army and US Air Force bands at Fort McPherson, GA, Scott AFB, IL and Wright Patterson AFB, OH from 1995-2017, during which time he performed as section leader in small and large ensembles, as a feature soloist, and also as an occasional vocalist. He continues as a freelance hornist and private instructor in the St Louis metropolitan area, and, since 2001 as a member of the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus.

    Bio: Cara Kizer is currently horn professor at Jefferson College and McKendree University. Most recently she was Second Horn with the Seattle Symphony for two seasons. Prior to that appointment, Ms. Kizer was Assistant Principal/Utility Horn of the Colorado Symphony and also Assistant Principal/ Utility Horn of the New York Philharmonic. Before winning her position in the New York Philharmonic, she was a regular substitute player for three seasons. As her career began in New York City, she was an active freelancer, performing with groups such as the New York City Opera, the Orchestra of St. Luke`s, recording many movie scores, and performing on Broadway. Ms. Kizer has also performed with the St. Louis Symphony, the Kansas City Symphony, the Minnesota Orchestra, and she has performed as guest principal horn with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. Ms. Kizer was also a first prize winner at the American Horn Competition.

    A native Texan, Ms. Kizer holds a Bachelor`s degree from Texas Tech University, a Master`s degree from The Juilliard School, and was the first horn player awarded an Artist Diploma from The Curtis Institute of Music. Her primary teachers have included Anthony Brittin, Christopher Smith, and the former New York Philharmonic Associate Principal Horn, the late Jerome Ashby.

  • Travis Lewis

    Bio: Travis Lewis is a guitar player and composer with over 20 years of experience as a performer and educator and is known not only in the United States but also in Japan. He received his Doctorate of Musical Arts degree with a concentration in Jazz Performance (and music theory cognate) at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana where he served as undergraduate guitar teacher to the Jazz department under the tutelage of Lawrence Gray. Travis did his undergraduate and Master`s work under the instruction of 7-string guitarist Rick Haydon.

    Travis has a diverse and prolific background playing in multiple eclectic ensembles. Between the years of 2005-2011, Travis made a name for himself in Hiroshima where he performed and taught throughout Japan. His most recent accomplishments include being nominated for Best Jazz Group by the Riverfront Times as a member of the St. Louis based band Animal Children and his work with the nationally known band So Many Dynamos. As a member of the Dynamos, he performed at several major venues and music festivals throughout the U.S. A small list of these include South by Southwest, Pygmalion, and the Valley of the Vapors.

    As a Jazz musician, Lewis is a top call guitarist in St. Louis and has performed on guitar with several major artists including Houston Person, Randy Brecker, The Jim Widner Big Band, George Gee Orchestra, Dave Scott, Dave Pietro, Ken Peplowski, and Terrell Stafford. He has also performed at several conferences including those held by the Jazz Educators Network, North American Saxophone Alliance, and most recently the College Music Society`s national conference in Santa, NM where he gave a solo guitar performance presentation that featured the music of Aaron Copland and Ennio Morricone.

    Currently, Travis teaches at Jefferson College, Blackburn College, KDHX Folk School, and is part of the St. Louis Classical Guitar Society`s Guitar Horizon program.

    Bio: Paula Martin has been an active choral music educator for more than thirty years, having taught singers from kindergarten through graduate school. Professor Martin began her career teaching K-12 vocal music for the Grandview R-2 School District in Jefferson County. She spent more than twenty years as Director of Choirs at Oakville High School in South St. Louis County. While at Oakville High School, Professor Martin`s choirs performed for the Annual Conference of the Missouri Music Educators Association five times. In addition, the Oakville High School Chamber Choir performed under her direction for the Southwestern Divisional Conference of the American Choral Director`s Association in 2009. Professor Martin is the Artistic Director for the Kirkwood Children`s Chorale, and conducts Concert Choir and Cantando Singers. She is also the Artistic Director and Conductor for Enchorum, a professional choral ensemble that performs throughout the St. Louis area.

    She has treated patients in acute care and skilled nursing facilities and currently treats patients in home health.     Bio: Praised for her warmth of tone and spirit, Mezzo-Soprano Johanna Nordhorn has graced audiences across the nation with her heartfelt performances and exotic sound. Originally hailing from Winter Park, FL, Johanna received her Masters Degree from Indiana University and accepted positions as a Gerdine Young Artist with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis in 2011 and 2013, where she most notably covered international opera star Denyce Graves and sang a concert of Ricky Ian Gordon`s music with the composer at the piano. Since moving to St. Louis in 2012, she has won the Southern Illinois Young Artist Competition, placed at the Metropolitan National Council Awards, was awarded the title of "St. Louis`s Best New Opera Singer" in the St. Louis Post Dispatch, and has received an Individual Artist`s Grant from the Regional Arts Commission. She has also been a featured soloist with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Union Avenue Opera, Gateway Opera, and the Kingsbury Ensemble.

    Johanna loves to teach and runs a successful private studio from which she has sent many wonderful singers off into their own musical careers as performers, educators, and music therapists.

    Bio: Dustin Shrum is a versatile trumpet player in the St. Louis and Kansas City area. Dustin is currently the Director of Bands at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School in the St. Louis Public Schools District. He is also the Director of Jazz Studies and McKendree University in Lebanon, IL.

    Dustin holds Bachelor`s degrees in Music Education and Trumpet Performance from the University of Missouri - St. Louis, and a Master of Arts in Music from the University of Missouri - Kansas City.

    Dustin has performed with various groups such as the Funky Butt Brass Band, the Jazz St. Louis Big Band, the Jim Widner Big Band, Master Blaster featuring Steve Ewing, and El Monstero.

    Bio: Jo Ellen Stringer earned her A.A. degree at Jefferson College and her B.S. and M.A.T. degrees from Southeast Missouri State University. She has completed additional course work at Southeast Missouri State University. Ms. Stringer has more collegiate career victories than any other women`s division volleyball coach. Ms. Stringer`s Vikings have appeared at the national championships 21 times. She reached the 1,000th victory mark in September of 2000. Ms. Stringer was also one of the five original inductees into the NJCAA Volleyball Coaches` Hall of Fame.

    Bio: Joseph Thurman holds an M.A. degree and a B.A. degree from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. He is currently working toward a Community College Teaching and Learning Graduate Certificate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and then plans to begin work on his Ph.D. in history. Joseph`s primary field of interest is 19th-century United States history, specifically the Reconstruction Era. He is currently conducting research for an article about the education of Freedmen in Missouri during Reconstruction. Joseph has also conducted award winning research on the Nazi educational system. In addition, he recently published an article on James H. Lucas in the Missouri Historical Review, which he plans to extend to a full-length biography. Joseph has taught United States History at Jefferson College since August 2004. He has also taught United States, European, and World History at Lewis and Clark Community College in Godfrey, Illinois (2005-2008).

    Bio: Mr. Trucks has worked as an adjunct instructor in the Business Management Department at Jefferson College since 2005 and currently teaches introductory Bookkeeping and QuickBooks courses. After graduating from the University of Central Missouri with a Bachelors of Science in Hotel Administration, Ron worked in the industry for such companies as Hampton Inn Hotels and the Adam`s Mark Hotel Company. Along with operating his own bookkeeping and small business management consulting firm for almost 20 years, he currently serves as the Executive Director for a national non-profit organization headquartered in St. Louis. Additionally, Mr. Trucks has served as a volunteer member of the Board of Directors for Arsenal Credit Union for over 8 years.

  • Tyler Vahldick

    Bio: Trombonist Tyler Vahldick has an active career working for many different music organizations throughout the U.S. He was appointed Second Trombone with the Las Vegas Philharmonic at the start of the 2016-17 season and also holds the position of 2nd/bass trombonist with The Muny. He also works extensively with the Kansas City Symphony and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, and many others.

    He previously held the positions of Principal Trombone of the Michigan Opera Theatre Orchestra and the Wichita Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed as Principal Trombone with the Kansas City Symphony, Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, Czech National Symphony, London Sinfonietta, Orpheus Sinfonia, Spoleto Festival USA and the Verbier Festival Orchestra, and has worked with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Canterbury Cathedral Choral Society, Bahrain Symphony, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and many others throughout Europe.

    As a soloist, Tyler has performed with the University of Central Missouri Wind Ensemble; the European Youth Music Orchestra in Frankfurt, Germany; Regent Brass Band and Milton Keynes Brass Band in London; and the Springfield Symphony and the Taneycomo Festival Orchestra in Missouri, serving as Artistic Advisor for the latter since 2011. Equally at home with popular music, Tyler has performed for shows in London`s West End and multiple Broadway tour productions in the U.S. and, as a jazz trombonist, has appeared with the Denmark Street Big Band and Hot Orange Big Band in London; Swing 42`s house band in New York; and the Boulevard Big Band in Kansas City. In recent years, he has recorded with Madeline Bell, Stax Dempsey, Hot Orange Big Band, and the Royal Academy of Music Brass Soloists, and appears on the 25th anniversary album of the Verbier Festival Orchestra. A native of Branson, Missouri, Tyler has performed at the Bobby Vinton Theater, Andy Williams Theater, Silver Dollar City and the Grand Palace Theater.

    Bio: Jennifer earned her Master`s in Social Work degree from St. Louis University and her Bachelor`s of Art`s degree in Psychology and Sociology from Maryville University. Jennifer has worked with women who have been abused by their spouses, women who have been in prison, children who were involved with the juvenile justice system, children involved in special education, women and children with alcohol and/or drug addictions, children whose parents were either separated or divorced and their parents, children who have been abused (physically and sexually) by their parents and children and adults who are mentally ill. Currently Jennifer works part time for the Fox C-6 School District as a school social worker at the Don Earl Early Childhood Center.
