Course Description: Prerequisites: Reading Proficiency and one of the following:
3.0 HS GPA
HiSET College/Career Readiness or GED score of 175+
ACT English score of 18+ within two years
Accuplacer Next Gen Reading score of 254+ within the last two years
ENG 090 with a "C" or better
ENG034 with a grade of "C"or better
Corequiste of ENG099 Foundations of Composition is required if reading proficiency is met and one of the following:
GED score of 165-174 within two years
ACT English score of 17 or less within two years
Foundations of English Composition is taken concurrently with English Composition I (ENG 101) to give students additional practice with the writing skills, reading skills, and contextualized study skills necessary for successful, independent completion of academic writing projects. (F,S,Su)
English Composition I offers the student the opportunity to learn to write competent expository essays and to do preliminary research. Students will review grammar and mechanics, but the emphasis is on the writing process. English Composition I is required for all degrees. Non-native speakers of English who do not qualify for ENG101, based on the required test scores, must take ENG031, English as a Second Language I; ENG032, English as a Second Language II; ENG033, English as a Second Language III; and/or ENG034, English as a Second Language IV. Bio: Holly Ross joined Jefferson College in 2015, beginning as a substitute instructor with the Area Technical School (ATS). She was hired full-time in 2016 to teach Applied Communications at ATS. In fall 2024, she joined the English Department as an Assistant Professor and is currently an Associate Professor of English. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Education from Missouri Baptist University and a Master of Arts in English from Southern New Hampshire University, and holds a Missouri teaching certificate spanning grades 1 - 12.
