Adult Education Services

Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) is designed to improve the educational level of adults, out-of-school youth, and non-English speaking persons seventeen (17) years of age and older.

Eligible students are individuals seeking to prepare for life, work, or post-secondary education with skill levels below the college level and who have the ability to benefit from the instruction.

Jefferson College AEL is the only Department of Elementary and Secondary Education approved program in Jefferson County and offers the following services at no charge:

  • High School Equivalency (HSE) Test Preparation and Instruction - HiSET and GED:  Provides test preparation and instruction in Language Arts (Reading), Language Arts (Writing), Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.
  • English Language Learners (ELL):  Provides instruction for English Language Learners and offers individual and small group instruction. Call for more information about our next scheduled ELL orientation at (636) 481-3437.
  • Adult Literacy Program: Assists adults with fundamental reading skills and matches students with a tutor for individualized instruction. For more information, contact our Literacy Coordinator at (636) 481-3437.
  • Integrated Education and Training (IET): Gets students started on their career journey. We are offering:
    • Substitute Teacher and Paraprofessional Certification Course (stand alone certificate or as a pre-apprenticeship for those wanting to continue their education to become a teacher)
    • TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) Test Preparation Course: This is the exam used by the Jefferson College Nursing Program for admission to the program.
    • Pre Health Career Pathway: For those interested in a career in the health field, but are unsure of which path to take.
    • Culinary Launchpad: Skills, Servsafe, and Professional Readiness: This course is designed as a starting point for those interested in a Culinary Arts degree.

Important information regarding AEL for students 21 years of age and under:

Students 21 and under
All students age 21 or younger enrolling in Jefferson Collegeโ€™s Adult Education & Literacy (AEL) program must provide documentation at Orientation:

  • If you attended a public high school: an official dropout letter from your home high school.
  • If you were homeschooled: a parental permission letter to enroll in the AEL program.
