Account – You can renew items or check the status of requested materials through your Library account. Have your student ID, faculty or staff ID ready to access your account. Community Borrowers can renew items by phone - please have your card number available when calling the Library.

Bestsellers – Bestsellers are a rotating collection of popular titles. These items are listed in Archway as JC-Hillsboro Bestseller 1st and are located on the first floor of the Library in Hillsboro. In addition, there is a rotating selection of these titles at the Library in Arnold. Visit a list of new titles here.

Bills for Unreturned Items – If items are not returned on time, you will receive a bill for overdue or lost materials. When a bill is sent, a hold is placed on a student’s record at the College preventing registration and the release of grades or transcripts.

Books – Most titles in your Library’s collection of over 70,000 titles are shelved on the second floor. Reference books, a collection of bestseller fiction, and new books are shelved on the first floor. Search Archway, the Library’s online catalog, to find books by title, author or subject. If you do not find the books you need in the Library's collection, search MOBIUS, the shared online catalog of Missouri's academic libraries, to find and request books available statewide.  While other types of material are listed in the catalog, only books may be requested.  Books often arrive within two to four days.  Materials in our collection and those requested through MOBIUS may be sent to the Library at Arnold or to Northwest  or Imperial sites for pickup.

Borrowing Materials – A Student ID, Faculty/Staff ID, or Community Borrower's Card is required to borrow materials. Present your card at the Circulation Desk on the first floor to check out material. Loan lengths range from one hour for some reserve items to three weeks for most books. 

CD-Rs – Patrons may purchase a burnable CD at the Circulation Desk at Hillsboro for $1.00.

Cell Phones –The most common request from our library users is to encourage courteous cell phone use in the library. Noisy conversations and/or ringtones are disturbing to other library users. Our cell phone policies are as follows:

  • Set phones to vibrate on the first floor at Hillsboro and at Arnold
  • Turn off cell phones on the second floor at Hillsboro
  • Take lengthy or noisy conversations outside

Citing Sources – For electronic sources, visit our online guide, Citing Sources, adapted from the Simon and Schuster Handbook for Writers by Lynn Quitman Troyka and Douglas Hesse. For print resources or more detailed information, a copy of this handbook may be checked out for in-house use at the the Circulation Desks at both the main Library in Hillsboro and the Library at Arnold. Copies may also be purchased at the Jefferson College Bookstore.

Collaboration – Collaboration and group study is encouraged on the first floor of your Library at Hillsboro. However, please be considerate when using your cell phone or listening to audio files on the computer on the first floor. The second floor of the Library at Hillsboro is reserved for quiet study. Study rooms are available for individual or group study on both the first and second floors. The Library at Arnold is a small space so please be considerate of others with your conversations.


Collections – Your Library has a book collection of over 70,000 volumes, including Circulating (may be checked out), Reference (non-circulating), New Books and Bestsellers. Your Library subscribes to a number of magazines, journals, and newspapers. Your Library also has a collection of over 2,000 videotapes, DVDs, Music CDs, and audio books on tape and CD. Color printing - Color prints are available at the Library at Hillsboro.  The cost for this service is $.50 per page.  Stop by the Circulation Desk on the first floor of the Library on the Hillsboro campus and find out how this service works.

Community Borrowers – Jefferson County residents age 18 or older may purchase a library card for $15 per year. Residents sixty five years old and older qualify for free borrowing privileges. Find out more...

Computer Software & Media – The following software is available on all Library computers: Microsoft Office Suite, Internet Explorer, and Firefox.  Choices, a career planning software, is available through STARS under the student tab. Computers have CD, DVD, floppy disk, and USB access. All users must comply with the  Jefferson College Academic Computer Use Policy.

Computers – Patrons may use computers in the  first floor Library Use Instruction classroom at Hillsboro and on both floors of the Library in Hillsboro and in the Library at Arnold. All computers have Internet access and several software packages. The Library at Hillsboro also offers laptops for use in the library.  Jefferson College students using computers for academic purposes have priority. All users must comply with the Jefferson College Academic Computer Use Policy.


Course Reserves – Many Jefferson College faculty members place items on reserve for class use. Most Course Reserve materials may be used in the Library only. Loan lengths and use restrictions are set by faculty members and range from one-hour use to one week. Students may search Archway by the faculty member's name or by course title.

Databases – An article database enables you to locate and retrieve articles from magazines and journals. Your Library subscribes to several databases, including both subject specific and multidisciplinary. Some contain full-text articles, while others only contain citations and/or abstracts. Dictionaries & Encyclopedias – Your Library offers a collection of both print and online dictionaries and encyclopedias. Print titles are located on the first floor of the Library in the Reference section. To visit our online titles, click here.

eBooks – What is an eBook? An electronic book, of course! Through eBooks on EBSCOhost, and ebrary, subscription based eBook providers, your Library can deliver titles direct to your computer or mobile device. eBooks are lightweight, searchable, and environmentally friendly. Plus they are available 24/7.

Exhibits – Check out the rotating in-house and online exhibits @ your Library. There are book displays on the first floor, in the art and elevator alcove and in two display cases near the east entrance of the Library on the second floor. ArtSpaces, primarily located in the Library Use Instruction classroom and adjacent alcove features the work of students, art faculty and other local artist groups.  Visit your Library website to find featured resources and Library materials. Faculty Services & Partnerships – The Library is a valuable resource for faculty! The Library has a variety of Library Use Instruction classes available or can customize a session especially for your assignment or discipline. Faculty can visit the Faculty Services tab to suggest titles for purchase or place items in Course Reserves for students. Flash Drives – Flash drives may be used in all Library computers and are available for purchase at the Circulation Desk.

Food & Drink – Food is not allowed in the Library or study rooms with the exception of special events or programs. Covered drinks are allowed in the Library.


Genealogy – The Jefferson County History Center, located on the second floor of the Library, is used for genealogical research by residents of Jefferson County as well as visitors from many different states whose ancestors once lived here.

Government Documents – Jefferson College Library serves as a selective federal depository for Missouri's Third Congressional District through its participation in the Federal Depository Library Program. Many government publications are available in the Library in either a paper or an electronic format. This collection is open to all residents of the Third Congressional District as well as to the students, faculty and staff at Jefferson College. History Center – The Jefferson County History Center, located on the second floor of the Library, serves as an archive for Jefferson County. Jefferson College Library operates the History Center and answers mail, telephone and This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it queries. Staff will answer questions about the records and provide specific information from them if the amount of research time is reasonable. Hours – Jefferson College Library hours vary according to semester, interim, and campus and state holidays. Hillsboro and Arnold Library hours may differ. Check our current hours here.

How to Use Your Library – Insist on getting the most out of your Library! Learn how to be an information expert. Amaze your friends and family. Find anything on the Internet and even find stuff on the “hidden web”. Ask a Librarian to show you the ropes.

Headphones – Patrons may check out headphones at the Circulation Desk for use in the Library. 

Imperial Site Library Services – Library assistance is available at the Jefferson College site in Imperial, Missouri, through the Library's Ask a Librarian service. Interlibrary loan – Jefferson College students, faculty and staff may request books and articles that your Library does not own. Fill out an interlibrary loan request form for an article or book here. The Library reserves the right to limit interlibrary loan requests.

Internet Access – Your Library provides high speed Internet access on our computers or through wireless connection on your laptop or ours. All users must comply with the Jefferson College Academic Computer Use Policy.

Journals – When doing college level research or assignments, students are encouraged to find scholarly journal articles. A journal contains peer-reviewed articles written by scholars while a magazine contains more popular articles often written by journalists. The terms periodical and serial are more generic and refer to all types of these materials. To find scholarly journals, consult our online databases.

Keyword SearchArchway, our Library catalog, includes an option which allows the user to search by keyword(s).  This natural language search  is the same type of search you do when searching the Internet with Google. The results will include all records that include your terms. To narrow your search, try a subject or title search.

Laptop Zones – Your Library has two Laptop Zones and laptops for students to check out for use in the Library. Although wireless is available everywhere throughout the Library, the Zones, located on the second floor, has convenient electrical outlets for plugging in your laptop or ours. Library laptops have wireless Internet connection as well as wireless printing. Just ask at the Circulation Desk for details!

Library Staff – Do you need help finding the right information fast? Your Library has an exceptional group of dedicated staff. Any member of our staff can provide expert one-on-one Library Use Instruction for patrons in need of research assistance.

Library Use Instruction – Do you know how to use the Library? Do you know how to find and evaluate information on the Internet? Are you Information Literate? Your Library is the ultimate place to get Library Use Instruction (also called Bibliographic Instruction). Not sure where to start? Ask a Librarian for help.


Loan LengthsCirculation Loan Lengths vary depending on material type and range from one hour for some reserve items to three weeks for most books.

Locations – The main Library is located on the Hillsboro, Missouri campus , with a branch at the Arnold site. Library services are also available at the Northwest  and Imperial campuses where patrons can arrange to pick up and return Library materials.  Patrons at the all campuses can get research help through the Ask a Librarian service by chat, phone, or email..

Magazine, Journal and Newspaper Articles Online – Use one or more of the Library’s online databases to find articles by topic. To find a specific title, you may search using this online tool.

Magazines, Journals and Newspapers in Print – Browse these collections in the periodical section on the first floor of the Library. The main Library subscribes to a number of periodical titles; issues for the current year are shelved in alphabetical order. A selection of titles is available at the Library in Arnold.  Many of these titles are not available in full text on the Internet or through our databases, such as Nursing.

Microfilm Reader/Printers – The Library maintains a collection of back issues of some magazines and newspapers on microfilm. Readers are available on the second floor of the Library at Hillsboro.

MOBIUS Catalog – Find and request books held in other Missouri academic libraries by searching MOBIUS, which provides access to a collection of over 20,000,000 titles. MOBIUS is available to Jefferson College students, faculty and staff. Books generally arrive within 2 – 4 days. Find out more...

Music CDs – Browse the Library's collection of music CDs on the first floor or search Archway for your title. On the first search page, click "Keywords" and from the Material Type dropdown, choose Audio - Music for material type.

New Books – Your Library adds new titles to the collection frequently. Visit New Books on the Library website to access both selected titles and complete lists of new books in many subjects.

Northwest Site Library Services – Library assistance is available at the Jefferson College site in Cedar Hill, Missouri, through the Library's Ask a Librarian service. Patrons can arrange to have Library materials (books, videotapes and DVDs, music CDs and government documents) sent to Northwest for pick up. Find out more...

Online Course Material – Videotapes, DVDs or CDs are required for the online courses listed here. The main Library at Hillsboro and the Library at Arnold provide copies of these materials for students enrolled in the courses. Students may check out sets of materials for the semester at the Circulation Desk at either location. To arrange for a set of materials to the Northwest or Imperial site for pick up, use the online request form

Overdue or Lost Materials – If items are not returned on time, you will receive a bill for overdue or lost materials. When a bill is sent, a hold is placed on a student’s record at the College preventing registration and the release of grades or transcripts.

Personal Items– Do not leave personal items unattended in the Library. Library staff cannot be responsible for items left unattended by a computer, in a study room or on a table, etc. Items left unattended will be confiscated and turned over to Public Safety.

Photocopiers – Self-service photocopiers are located at both Jefferson College Library facilities. Copies are twenty cents each.

Printing – Networked printers are available in all throughout the Library at Hillsboro and Arnold. Your Library provides free printing, but wasted resources cost everyone! Just ask or refer to Additional Library Policies available at the Library Circulation Desk. The Jefferson College Academic Computer Use Policy provides more information on ethical use of printing resources. Community Borrowers are asked to pay ten cents a page for printing.

Quiet, Please? – Respect the space, respect others @ your Library. Collaboration and group study are encouraged on the first floor of your Library. However, please be considerate when using your cell phone or listening to audio files on the computer on the first floor. The second floor of the Library is reserved for quiet study - no talking is allowed on the quiet floor. Study rooms are available for individual or group study on both the first and second floors.


Recycling – Using your Library is all about recycling! There are numerous paper recycling containers on both floors of the Library. An aluminum can and bottle recycling container is located on the first floor of the Library near the west entrance.

Reference Books – Your Library has an extensive collection of print reference materials located on the first floor between the west and south entrances. At Arnold, these books are located at the Circulation Desk. This collection includes dictionaries, encyclopedias, directories, and other useful reference works. These types of resources are generally not available online, and are for Library use only. Search Archway to locate a specific title.

Renewing Library Material – Patrons may renew most Library material unless another patron has requested it. Renew one of several ways:

  • Students, faculty and staff may renew items through Archway
  • Renew by phone at 636-797-3000 ext. 3167 or 3166. Be prepared to supply your ID number or Community Borrower number.
  • Renew in person. Simply bring your Jefferson College student, faculty or staff ID or Community Borrower's card with you!

Reserves – Many Jefferson College faculty members place items on reserve for class use. Most Course Reserve materials may be used in the Library only. Loan lengths and use restrictions are set by faculty members and range from one-hour use to one week. Students may search Archway by the faculty member's name or by course title.

Returning Library Material – Library material may be returned at the Circulation Desk on the first floor, in the book drop outside the Library’s west entrance, in the Library at Jefferson College Arnold or in the offices at Jefferson College Northwest or Jefferson College Imperial.

Student IDs – Students must present a Jefferson College student ID when checking out any material – even if you’re only taking it to a photocopier! Get your ID at the Student Center or Circulation Desk in the Library in Hillsboro or Arnold or at the Northwest or Imperial office. There is a $7.00 fee for a replacement card. At the end of the semester, KEEP YOUR CARD! It will be updated with a sticker each semester you are enrolled.

Study Areas and Study Rooms – The Library in Hillsboro offers several different types of study areas on both floors including study rooms for small groups and rooms equipped with VCR/DVD players. The second floor of the Library is reserved for quiet study. For the consideration of others, no talking is allowed.

Suggest a Purchase – The Library welcomes suggestions for purchase from students, faculty and staff. Visit the STARS Library tab to fill out an online suggestion form or use one of the suggestion boxes in the Library.

Technology – In cooperation with Jefferson College's Academic Computing department, your Library is continuously updating software and hardware to provide you with the latest technologies available for accessing information.

Telephone Use – The Library does not have a telephone for public use. For emergency calls only, we will allow you to use the phone to make a brief call.

USB – All Library computers provide convenient USB ports for plugging in flash drives and other gadgets.

Videotapes and DVDs – The Library has a collection of a large number of videotapes and DVDs. Circulating videotapes and DVDs are shelved on the first floor of the Library. Check out our list of Videos by Subject.

Videos: Faculty Only – Some videotapes and DVDs may be checked out only by Jefferson College faculty and staff. These items are listed in Archway as JC-Hillsboro Faculty Video Only. Even though students and community members may not take these titles home, they may view them in one of our first floor study rooms.

Websites – Ever notice that Internet searching can be time consuming? Google is a great tool to find information, but does not provide evaluation of that information. For quality web resources, it’s much easier and faster to rely on your Library for suggestions. Our Recommended Websites page contains a list of resources selected and evaluated by librarians for their usefulness, reliability, and credibility.

Wireless – The Library is the most popular place on campus for high speed wireless Internet access. The Zone, located on the second floor, has convenient electrical outlets for plugging in your laptop or ours. The Library in Arnold is also a wireless hotspot. Yearbooks – Although Jefferson College has not published yearbooks since the early 1970s, the Jefferson County History Center, located in your Library, has the complete collection of yearbooks dating from 1965.
