As a new school year begins, Jefferson College has implemented a series of designated smoking areas on the Hillsboro campus as a means to accommodate both smokers and non-smokers alike. The decision to create designated smoking areas comes at the recommendation of an ad-hoc committee comprised of smoking and non-smoking faculty, staff and students who surveyed the campus community last year. The establishment of 10 outdoor areas will allow non-smokers the freedom to enter Hillsboro campus buildings at designated entrances without walking through cigarette smoke, while allowing smokers to be shielded from the elements near other entrances. Similar designations are also in place at Jefferson College Arnold and Imperial. Smoking is already prohibited inside any college building and is now entirely prohibited near the Administration Building, Child Development Center, and Area Technical School on the Hillsboro campus in addition to Jefferson College Northwest in Cedar Hill as the facility is rented from the Northwest School District where all buildings and property are smoke-free. To see designated smoking/non-smoking areas by building, visit the Jefferson College website at www.jeffco.edu and click on the "Community" link. Signs will be posted outside/inside each location to identify respective smoking/non-smoking zones. Those who smoke outside the established areas will be politely asked to move to the appropriate designated zone. |
