#11-51

The Jefferson College Xi Zeta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa honor society has selected retiring Nursing Professor Fern Schuessler as the organization's 2011 Teacher of the Year.

"It is a great honor to be selected as a Phi Theta Kappa Teacher of the Year by this distinguished student group," she said. "I know each of my students has contributed to how I live my life and my competency in my work, and I hope I have done the same for them...to learn to discern, to always care and share, to cope and to always hope."

Schuessler has taught in the Nursing department since 1997. She has also been a nursing clinical instructor for the college since 1985. She has taught Nutrition, Fluids, Electrolytes, Acid-Base Balance, Cardiology, Dermatology, Emergency Nursing, Gastrointestinal, Shock and Autoimmune Diseases, and co-taught Nursing Fundamentals, Pharmacology, and Obstetrics.

She has served on several committees including: Program and Facilities Planning, Academic Affairs, Nursing Admissions, Nursing Curriculum Development, Nursing Computer and Technology, and Nursing Faculty and Student Handbooks. Schuessler has been recognized annually for the past eight years in "Who's Who Among America's College Teachers."
