Vikings Sweep CMU To Open 2013 (3-5-13)

The Jefferson College Softball team opened their 2013 season in grand fashion Monday afternoon, sweeping visiting Central Methodist University 9-2, 4-2.
Sophomore Megan Gurski opened the season on the mound for the Vikings and was superb, allowing six hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in her seven innings of work. The Vikings started strong offensively as well, scoring nine runs on ten hits.
Holly Marko hit a double to lead off the bottom of the second and Christina Young drove her in with a double to deep center field.
In the fourth inning Megan Gurski singled, Chloe Wolf doubled and Amanda Williams followed that up with a two-out home run. Jefferson added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, including Kara Pochons two-run homer in the sixth. Both CMU runs came in the top of the sixth inning.
Game two saw sophomore Chelsea Smith match Gurski’s pitching performance, allowing only three hits and no walks while striking out eight.
The Vikings scored one run in the third inning, two more in the fourth and one in the fifth. Young slammed her second double of the day in the third and scored on a double by Wolf. Kayla Meier hit a two-run homer that drove in Gurski who had singled. With two outs in the fifth, Marko drove in Young with a single to finish the scoring.
The Vikings are back in action at home Friday March 8th against John A. Logan. First pitch is slated for 2:00 pm.
