Vikings Off To A Great 2012 Start (9-14-12)

The 2012 Jefferson College Men’s Soccer team is off to a great start. The Vikings 3-1-1 record included games with three top ranked teams, San Jacinto-18th, Tyler Junior College-4th and South Suburban-12th.  The Vikings are currently ranked 14th in the nation for the second week in a row.  The Vikings play a tough schedule which this season could be labeled the most competitive schedule of the program’s history.  The Vikings currently have on their schedule several teams ranked in the NJCAA poll.
Jefferson started their season against #12 ranked South Suburban and ended with a disappointing tie after double overtime.  The next day Jefferson traveled to Parkland and defeated them 4-3 to regain their competitive edge before going into Texas the following weekend.
Jefferson rolled into Texas and over San Jacinto who was ranked 18th in the nation beating them 3-0.  The next day Jefferson faced Tyler, #4 in the nation, and lost a great battle 2-0.  The score was not a true indication of how the game went and the Vikings left Texas with many positives.
When Jefferson returned home to play Heartland it was an opportunity to return the favor to Heartland who beat the Vikings last year.  Jefferson controlled the entire game from beginning to end and defeated Heartland 2-0.
Jefferson faces Illinois Central College (Received notes in NJCAA poll) on September 14th and the Vikings have found that ICC is always a competitive, worthy opponent and provides a great game for the Vikings.  Illinois Central advanced to the National Championship 3 times and has always been a powerful program.
Jefferson will face Lincoln College, who started off the season ranked #10 in the nation, on September 18th.   Jefferson has never lost to Lincoln College but they do keep the game tight and honest at all times.  Lincoln College has advanced to the National Tournament the last two years in a row.
Jefferson will host a couple of regional games before heading out of town to Georgia. Darton State College and Georgia Perimeter College will provide a great weekend for the Vikings at the end of September.  Darton is currently ranked #1 in the nation and Georgia Perimeter is ranked #6 in the nation.
The rest of the schedule for the Vikings include all Region 16 opponents and will be a great way to end the regular season with every ounce of experience utilized in the regional games and hopefully secure the #1 Regional seed going into the Regional Tournament.
Coach Garza is very happy with team progress and is more than pleased with the strength of the schedule
“Playing the best teams in the country is important and a benefit to our players and the Jefferson College program.  NCAA schools can see our players compete with the best NJCAA players in the country and assess the talent Jefferson players hold.  Viking players are pushed every week and the elite competition brings out our best performances on the field.”-Garza
