Vikings Remain Undefeated In Region XVI (10-5-12) Print

A trip to Kansas City to play Region 16 rival Maple Woods ended well for the Jefferson College Vikings as they came away with a hard fought 3-2 victory.

Maple Woods scored first after 10 minutes, but just one minute later Rylan Smelcer volleyed in a rebound to knot the score at 1-1. Maple Woods played a physical game, and several yellow cautions were administered in the early going. A red card was issued to a Maple Woods player with 23 minutes left in the first half, and they were forced to play the rest of the game with ten men.

In the second half, Josh Ward headed in a Danny Arrazola corner kick to put the Vikings in front 2-1after 23 minutes. With 16 minutes left in the half, Pete Grindel tapped in a nice cross from Oscar Ortiz to extend the lead to two. However, with three minutes left in the game, Maple Woods scored to close the gap to 3-2. But from that point, the Vikings redoubled their efforts on defense and proceeded to close out the victory.

The Vikings record is now 7-4-1, and 3-0 in Region 16.
