The humanities consist of a variety of academic disciplines that study humanity and the human condition. The term refers broadly to the ways in which people relate to the world around them and understand what it means to be human. Areas of study include art, music, literature, civilization, history, theater, philosophy, and language. Humanities studies often focus on ways in which these subjects overlap and interact with each other.
Many courses across disciplines at Jefferson College meet the Humanities requirement for General Education and transfer. These classes are based on appreciation and analysis of the subjects, not hands-on creation, so a class that studies modern art is a Humanities course while a painting class is not. Jefferson College also offers classes that focus specifically on Humanities and have a HUM prefix.
